Look, this is a neat little tavern/pub located just off (well more or less surrounded by) the NKU campus. For the uninitiated, it can be difficult to find as it looks more or less like a house (which it once was) and has little signage or exterior advertising. The food is more or less standard US-Pub fare but the serving sizes are huge and the quality of things like burgers and wings and chicken tenders is better than most similar places. The salads are actually quite good and usually very fresh. The white-chicken-bean chilli is tasty but the serving size is smaller than it should be. All in all, the food is fine - this isn't Morton's we are talking about here... They have various specials such as 45-cent wings on Mondays, $1 burgers (not sliders btw!!!!) after 6PM on Tuesdays (small up-charges for bacon and tomatoes etc if you want that). Live trivia on Wednesdays and $1 domestic bottles from 8-9PM and 11-12PM on Thursdays (packed with students during those hours so be warned). They also have lunch specials so if you are in the area it is a cheap and tasty lunch. The crowd is an interesting mix of NKU-types and locals but almost everyone is friendly and the bartenders and staff are great. The beer selection is pretty good for a local place. They have probably 10 beers or so on tap with only a couple of them domestic. The craft-beer selection is relatively broad and frequently changes. They have a good selection of canned and bottled craft brews as well. They also have a variety of drink specials each night that change often so just ask them... I obviously really enjoy the place and spend too much $ and time there but of the local bars I have frequented in my life this one ranks right up there with the most interesting and fun... i decided to edit this to point out that smoking is still allowed (thank u geezuz) so if u r one of those folks who lose ur stuff over that thrn be warned).... but finding an area out of the smoking is usually not a tough act...

Chicken Wrap! So, we were in the area and decided we needed to visit this place. The location is ideal for NKU students, in fact we have no idea how Billie got such a great location for his bar! Chicken Wrap! The staff at the bar was great - very friendly, and the prices are pretty good - cheaper than some of the equivalent places across the river in Ohio. Chicken Wrap! There were some really friendly people all around, that had no problem talking to us. Chicken Wrap! The bar was filled with a bunch of regulars, that all seemed to know everyone. Chicken Wrap! We were sitting next a guy, who was raving on about the Chicken Wrap - it was great. It seems like every five minutes, he said something else about us needing to order the Chicken Wrap. So, I ordered the Chicken Wrap, and I get what he was talking about - it was really good. It actually had cheese it in - most the time it's just ranch, but this one had both...mind blown!! They also have beer tokens, or something - I can't remember what they were called, but don't confuse them for salt or pepper...ask Cindy about the story... Chicken Wrap.

Let me start by saying, HAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!!!! This place is absolutely hilarious. Just thinking about it makes me erupt with laughter, in a good way. My friend and I ventured here after a super long pool day. We searched on Yelp for the weirdest off the beaten path place we could find, an allas, Billie's showed it's face. We walk up and it is oddly located right atop a gigantic hill practically on NKY's campus, yet nothing else is around it. Not sure if this was just Billie's house and he converted it to a bar or what? Either way location obviously lends itself to a college bar. The atmosphere was fun and dive-y. Beers were cheap, pours were heavy, and the menu was basically anything fried you could ever want. Yes! I ordered the chicken fingers, and my friend had a chicken wrap. My only complaint/why this place is hilarious is because of the regulars here. There were about three old timers at the end of the bar and then there was one loner who was funny at first, but then started heckling us. If I wasn't with my friend I probably would have left, but since he was there we were just laughing and thinking, "OMG I can't believe this is happening right now!!" Overall, hecklers aside, the food was hot and cheap. I think my total for a gin and tonic and food was $15 bucks which isn't bad. I would suggest at least stopping here for a drink. It's a pretty funny dive.

NKU students don't make the same mistake I did. During my years at Northern, I'd overhear classmates saying "Let's go to Skyline for a beer." Then I would ponder "When did Skyline Chili (which is right down the road) start serving beer?" Not until I was a senior did I realize the Skyline to which everyone was referring was not Cincinnati's beloved chili parlor but the non-descript house at the top of John's Hill, which was really a bar. I was shocked. How could I have not known there was a bar within walking distance from campus? The confusion rested with the fact the building was practically unmarked, with nothing to distinguish it from the other university buildings that surrounded it. When I finally made it there for a drink, I wasn't impressed. Billie's Skyline was definitely the local dive. However, at the beginning of 2008, Skyline was re-launched (after the unfortunate passing of the long-time owner, Billie). The bar has been refurbished and now includes a pool table, new furnishings, and 21st century digital jukebox (which replaces the old-school country western filled dud). They also accept credit cards (with a $10 minimum). Typically a place like this might only garner a three star rating, but this joint fills a crater-like hole in NKU's otherwise dry campus. Now that there's a new sign out front, the next generation of students has no excuse to repeat history.

As a student at Northern Kentucky, how can you not love Skyline Tavern? And, be sure to get there why you can because we're not sure how much longer it's going to be there as the new connecting roads are built to surround Northern Kentucky. Skyline has lots of specials and deals on the daily, from dollar beers, dollar cheeseburgers, and $0.35 wings. There's karaoke on Wednesday nights and there's free pool and darts on some nights as well. $10.00 minimum on credit and debit cards Smoking inside and on the patio I recommend following them on twitter at SkylineTavern to catch their specials and deals!

While this bar is just off campus, few traditional students actually hang there. Because of its proximity to NKU, the ABC agents are frequent visitors, making carding by your bartender a necessity. They do serve food until around 10:00pm, I think, so if you're under 21 you can have a meal, but don't even TRY to order an adult beverage. Many people, including some locals and those students who CAN legally drink, tend to miss this place because the name is identical to area chili parlors. This is, of course, to the bar's detriment. I guess at one point there was a decent view of the now obscured Cincinnati skyline in the distance. Perhaps a name change would have helped, but it's more of a neighborhood bar than a campus hangout., so maybe not a big deal for the owners. The fact (garnered from a previous review) that a student could make it to senior year without knowing about the place speaks volumes about its profile. But again, not many students CAN feel comfortable there, unless they're on the 5-year (or more) graduation plan. Those students who are under 21 tend to frequent busy clubs where a FAKE ID can gain one entry, or flirting with the door person makes an ID unnecessary. I've become a semi-regualr at Billie's Skyline Tavern, and I really like the place. Sadly, however, my fave bartender left recently which has made it lose some of its "Cheers"-ness for me. But the regulars tend to be friendly and aren't particularly territorial, so newbies can feel welcome. Food is above average for a dive and service is usually quick and friendly. There are also a couple of semi-private rooms if one wanted to hold a party or meeting of some sort, though one might want to call ahead to see about catering for such a thing. I believe they may be adding a deck out back for those who enjoy the outdoors, but this could not be confirmed by the new bartender I was talking with that evening. And they have WiFi for those grad or post-bacc students working on a paper or lesson plan!
